Skin Surgery
What is involved in lipoma removal (excision)?
The excision of a lipoma is generally done as day surgery and maybe performed under general anaesthetic or local anaesthetic, depending on the size and location of the lipoma. If the lipoma is large, a small ellipse of skin will be removed at the same time, in order to avoid loose skin afterwards. The risks are minimal, but can include scarring, wound infection, bleeding, recurrence (the lipoma coming back) and the build-up of fluid underneath the scar (seroma)
What is involved in sebaceous cyst removal (excision)?
The excision of a sebaceous cyst is generally done under local anaesthetic as a day case procedure. The procedure involves removing the entire cyst and a small part of the skin overlying it. This is considered minor surgery and the main risks are wound infection, scarring and bruising.
