Benign Breast Conditions

Fibroadenoma & benign phyllodes tumour

Fibroadenomas are common benign breast lesions, usually diagnosed in women between 15 and 35 years of age. Phyllodes tumours are much less common than fibroadenomas and tend to occur in women in their 40s and 50s.

Nipple discharge

Nipple discharge is a fairly common finding amongst women, especially in women who have breastfed in the past. Most types of nipple discharge are completely benign. Occasionally, nipple discharge is a sign of a more serious underlying condition and needs further investigation or surgery.

Mastitis/breast abscess

Mastitis is a breast infection that can occur during breastfeeding, sometimes caused by a cracked nipple or when breasts have been incompletely emptied (i.e. during weaning).

Breast cysts

Breast cysts are fluid-filled cavities within the breast, which can vary in size and may be palpable. Cysts are often multiple and can be found in both breasts.

Breast pain (mastalgia)

Breast pain can be cyclical (associated with periods) or non-cyclical (located in a particular area within the breast).

Gynaecomastia

Gynaecomastia is a benign condition among men that involves increased growth of normal breast tissue.
