Gynaecomastia Surgery
What is Gynaecomastia Surgery?
Subcutaneous mastectomy (removal of the enlarged breast tissue in a male patient)
When gynaecomastia is painful or causes a distressing cosmetic appearance, surgery may be indicated. This involves a small incision at the edge of the areola (coloured area around the nipple) and removing the enlarged breast disc from underneath the nipple.
What are the risks of gynaecomastia surgery?
The risks of gynaecomastia surgery include disruption to the blood supply of the nipple, which can cause the skin to weep and delayed wound healing. A fluid collection (seroma) or blood collection (haematoma) may form underneath the wound. After removal of the enlarged breast disc, the nipple may have a “sunken” appearance.
